April 28, 2010 – Paris, Kentucky, USA – With only a few days until the Kentucky Derby, yearling thoroughbreds graze on a horse farm at sunrise. The young horses, bred for racing, will grow strong from the rich pastures and rolling hills until they begin training and have their shot at the Derby in two years. Success is a process that requires 3 commitments to become the best version of yourself:

Choose the correct Mindset

  • Choose to handle Events with an above the line Response. E+R=O
  • Understand that growing and building skills takes time and effort.
  • Get Comfortable being uncomfortable.
  • Making mistakes is part of the process; greatest teaching tool
  • Responsibility is genuine ownership of your attitude and behavior

Choose to own my situation, actions, and words

  • No BCD’s (Blame, Complain, Defend (excuses)
  • You are responsible for what you do
  • You are responsible for what you don’t do
  • You are responsible for how you respond to what happens to you
  • Actively seek feedback about your strengths and weaknesses, as well as ideas for improvement
  • Be humble enough to receive feedback (good or bad)

Choose to improve daily with a consistent and focused effort

  • Do the Work
  • Focused repetition is the single most powerful tactic for building skill
  • Embrace productive discomfort
  • When you make a mistake, stop and reflect on it, make adjustments, and go again.
  • DMGB (Doesn’t Matter Get Better)
  • It doesn’t matter what the situation is, your responsibility is to get better in how you respond. Be better today than you were yesterday; be better tomorrow than you were today.
